| The Jail Tree Legend As the legend goes, this 200-year-old mesquite tree served as the town jail during the last half of the 19th century. Prisoners were chained to the tree out in full view of everyone passing by. Today, the tree sits with an old, rusting safe, a statue of a prisoner with a button you can press to hear his sad story, and a wooden sign that reads "From 1863 to 1890, outlaws were chained to this tree for lack of a hoosegow...escapes were unknown." |
