PITTSBURGH ARMORY
On September 17, 1862 at 2:00 PM the Pittsburgh Arsenal exploded.  78 people were killed instantly.  Most were young women.  54 were never identified.
They were buried in a mass grave near Allegheny Cemetery.  This sad incident was overshadowed by the Battle of Antietam that occurred the same day.
The Battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest day in American History with 23,000 killed in one day.
